Bascom Room
Best Western InnTowner and The Highland Club in Madison, Wisconsin

Our Bascom meeting room is name after one of the University of Wisconsin's presidents in its early, formative years. John Bascom was recruited from Williams College in 1874 to take leadership of UW Madison. He favored a traditional liberal arts curriculum and immediately set out to improve the courses, faculty and quality of students attending the UW.

Bascom favored coeducation, and he arranged for women to have equal access to academic studies. His liberal beliefs associated him with women's suffrage, the right of labor to organize, and prohibition. Professor Bascom served as UW President until 1887.
